The EPA RRP (Renovation, Repair, and Painting) Rule requires two different types of lead paint certification prior to taking on work in homes built before 1978. The rule requires both firms and individuals to be certified. The following breakdown should provide easy to follow instruction on how to get certified and stay in compliance with the RRP Rule.
Firm Certification:
Firm lead paint certification is simply certification for your company and includes sole proprietorship. 
You must complete an on-line Lead-Safe Certification application on the EPA website. The application is about two pages in length and will ask for company specific information. This application is usually completed by the company owner. It takes approximately 30 days processing before you will receive your firm certification. This certification is issued by the EPA and will have your company name on it. The firm certificate is valid for 5 years and can be renewed following the same process.
Individual Certification:
Individual lead paint certification is received when you successfully complete an approved 
Lead Paint Certification course. This course is 8-hours in length and includes classroom instruction, hands-on training, and an EPA required exam. The training provider will issue you the certificate and it will have your name, address, and photo on it. The individual certificate is valid for 5 years and can be renewed by attending an approved 4-hour EPA Lead Certification Renewal Course. Training providers are required to receive a copy of your individual certificate prior to issuing you a renewal.
